What to Do if You are Considering Egg Donation
Are you thinking about egg donation as a way to make money? If so, you should know that the most you can expect to earn is $10,000 although most women make less than this. At some clinics you might make anywhere between $2000 and $5000 for a donation of 10 to 15 eggs. Some women donate their eggs multiple times thus earning more money. Once a donor has a success rate the agency they are working with may pay them a higher rate, although $10,000 is considered the maximum.
There are agencies that recruit women between the ages of 18 to their early 30s for egg donation. Medical tests and psychological tests are performed and the prospective donor must meet the criteria of the agency. Once deemed an acceptable candidate, the donor will prepared for the donation process. Egg donors are given fertility drugs to encourage a higher number of eggs, which are removed under sedation before being used for fertilization. The procedure is minor and there is little if any recovery time involved.
Because of both the money and the fact the procedure is minor, more and more women are donating their eggs. In some cases, the egg donor is someone the parents know who is helping them achieve their dream of conceiving a child. For example, a gay couple may decide on a close female friend or relative to serve as egg donor and/or surrogate. In the cases of women donating their eggs for money, they are not emotionally invested in the process. You need to figure out whether you are comfortable with there being children who share your genetics out there. To some, it is just like donating DNA, but to others it is a more sensitive and personal issue.
Egg donation is not a procedure to enter into lightly. The first thing you should do is look for clinics near your local area who are in the market for donated eggs. Make a list and contact each clinic for a consultation. They might also have websites where you can see if you meet the criteria for being an egg donor. Some agencies are stricter than others when it comes to requirements for donors. Also there are certain agencies looking for egg donors of particular types, like those with a certain ethnicity or build. Believe it or not, most agencies even want your SAT scores before they will consider you.
